Something New

Today I decided to start adding some new types of myths, legends or folklore to the site. I think these things will also be exciting for all of you to read and enjoy. I just didn't want to stick with the same kind of thing ever single day. I want to show the varying kinds of things all over the world even in modern day USA.

Personally, I find creatures and tall tales a little more exciting then the Roman and Greek mythology, but I still love them all. I will continue with what I have been doing but I think every few days I am going to throw in something special for all you readers out there.

Also, if you have any not so well know myths, legends or folklore, from anywhere around the globe, that you think might be interesting please email me with the information to Kellie (remove space) Cole at Gmail.com and I will be happy to research it and post about it as soon as I get all of the information together.

THE JERSEY DEVIL

American Mythology
Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA
Modern Legend/Folklore

According to one version of the tale, the Jersey Devil was the thirteenth child born to a Mrs. Leeds, a resident of the Pine Barrens during the mid-18th century. Mrs. Leeds was so upset at yet another pregnancy that after giving birth she exclaimed, "I am tired of children! Let the devil take this one!" What was once a human child immediately transformed into a winged monstrosity, which flew up through the chimney. There are many versions of this legend, differing in date of the birth and the degree of the Devil's disfigurement. In some stories, the Devil is merely a human child which Mrs. Leeds confined to her cellar or attic, only to have it escape into the woods (see feral children for more on similar legends and real life examples).

Another legend attributes the Devil's birth to a Gypsy curse placed upon a sElfish young woman who refused to give the Gypsy food and shelter. There are other tales that suggest Leeds hersElf was a witch or that she was cursed by locals for having an affair with a British soldier. The Shourds House, a log cabin within the Pine Barrens, was reputed to be the birthplace of the Devil. The Shourds house is still there today but only ruins of the foundation and some other parts are still there.

The Jersey Devil has been said to be companion to a headless pirate, a ghostly woman, and a mermaid. In certain parts of South Jersey, the Devil is rumored to live in an Agent Orange plant (Whose existence is similarly rumorious) near Chatsworth, a very small town surrounded by forest and sand.

There are many possible roots of the Jersey Devil legends. The Pine Barrens, as their name suggests, were avoided by early settlers as a desolate, threatening area. The barrens provided a natural refuge for those who wished to remain hidden, starting with religious dissenters, loyalists, fugitives, and deserting soldiers in colonial times. These people, cut off from much of the outside world, formed their own isolated groups and were pejoratively referred to as "pineys." Some of the pineys included notorious bandits known as Pine Robbers.

Pineys were further demonized after two eugenics studies at the turn of the century depicted them as congenital idiots and criminals. It is easy to imagine early tales of terrible monsters arising from a combination of sightings of genuine animals such as bears, the activities of pineys, and fear of the imposing barrens themselves.

Outdoorsman and author Tom Brown, Jr. spent several seasons living entirely within the wilderness of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. He recounts several occasions when terrified hikers mistook him for the Jersey Devil, particularly after he covered his whole body in mud to repel mosquitoes.

Of course, the most influential, and probably most important, roots of the tales of the Jersey Devil are the testimonials of people who have come into contact with the creature, from before the European settlers arrived to the present day.

HERA

Greek Mythology
Goddess of integrity in marriage.
Attributes: Peacock, Crown or Scepter
Roman: Juno
Daughter of Cronos and Rhea
Wife and lover of ZEUS

HERA became consumed by her jealousy over her husband’s infidelities. It caused her to be very vindictive towards ZEUS’ lovers and their children as well.

LETO was pursued relentlessly through out the entire Greek world. Finally, in the island of Delos she was able to rest and bare her children, APPOLO and ARTEMIS.

When IO, HERA’s very own mortal high priestess took up with her husband. It was because of this that HERA had her transformed into a cow that would forever be driven mad by the stinging of a fly.

SEMELE was yet another of ZEUS’ lovers, HERA tricked her into her own death at the hands of her lovers all mighty powers.

DIONYSOS, the son of SEMELE and ZEUS’, was driven mad. He caused two mortals, (ATHAMAS and INO) who tried to nurse the small god, to murder their own children in a fit of inanity.

Then there was HERAKLES (HERCULES to the Romans) who was fathered by ZEUS’ to help in an upcoming battle against the giants. HERA had sent two large snakes to kill him in his cradle, but even as a young infant HERAKLES was able to kill the snakes. It was much later in his life that HERA was able to finally succeed in driving him mad as she had many others before.

ZEUS’ and HERA had 3 children. ARES (the god of war), EILEITHYIA (the birth goddess), and HEBE (the cupbearer of the gods). HEPHAISTOS has two origins, either he is the child of ZEUS’ and HERA or HERA hersElf created the child, that is not clear.

HERA was widely worshiped in Crete and at Samos, which is where they say a great temple was built for her by the ARGONAUTS.

Purpose and Explanation

As you can see so far this site is going to take a long time to get together. My intentions are to put together all of the known myths and legends around the world. This is going to take a long time to do. I am also going to have to link all of these post back to each other so that they are easy to follow and understand. In addition I will be adding a new post everyday and updating the old pages when I find newer information or just something new to add.

I am doing this mostly for mysElf but I also hope that other people come and find it helpful and easy to read. I want everything to all be in one place. No one needs 800 books on mythology to get the basic facts on all of the mythological stories and creatures out there. It will all be right here.

Eventually, I think that I will be able to add some more non-traditional myths that people will enjoy more. For the time being I am going to fill in all of the major ones and then get to the good stuff.

If you enjoy mythology this is the place to be.

GAIA

Greek Mythology
Mother Earth/Earth Mother
All life began with her
Goddess of Death

GAIA is the mother earth. She gives gifts of fertility and abundance. She was not only the mother of all and the nourisher of children, but also the goddess of death, returning all things back to her.

GAIA was the earth that gave birth to the sky god, OURANOS. This sky god was her son but also her husband as well. It was because of their passion and love making that their children could not emerge from the womb.

One day one of GAIA’S children, the youngest CRONOS, used a sickle that his mother conceived to cut off the penis of his father from within the womb. This separated the sky and earth and weakened the sky. From the blood of this event, GAIA conceived FURIES; they are avenging goddesses that seek out murderers.

CRONOS believed that one of his own children were going to kill him and take his thrown. And because of this, he began eating each one of his children as they were born. GAIA gave RHEA the advice to save ZEUS by wrapping a stone in cloth and feeding it to CRONOS instead of his on child as he had done with all of the other children before him. ZEUS was then raised in secrecy in Crete. He returned to save his brothers and sisters from the belly of his father.

It is also possible that GAIA saved ZEUS from the same fate as his father, being destroyed by his own child, if GAIA hadn’t warned that a child born from METIS would replace him as supreme god. So, ZEUS swallowed METIS and later the goddess ATHENA sprang from his forehead.

ZEUS

Greek Mythology
God of the Sky, Weather, Social Life and Oaths.
He was the father of the gods and mortals.
Attributes: Thunderbolt, Eagle and Scepter
Roman: Jupiter
Son of Cronos and Rhea

ZEUS is one of the 12 OLYMPIANS who ruled after the overthrow of the TITANS. All of the OLYMPIANS are related to each other in some way. They are also named after the place they resided MT. OLYMPUS.

ZEUS overthrew his Father CRONOS. He then drew lots with his brothers POSEIDON (god of the sea) and HADES (god of the underworld). ZEUS won the draw and became the supreme ruler of the gods. He is lord of the sky, the rain god. His weapon is a thunderbolt, which he hurls at those who displease him. He is also known to punish those that lie or break oaths.

As the god of the sky ZEUS found it very easy to attract woman and he took full advantage of that gift. The fact that he was the supreme ruler of the gods also helped him in his romantic endeavors. Prior to his marriage to HERA, he was married first to METIS, then THEMIS. His eye fell on DEMETER but she did not give into him. His third marriage was to MNEMOSYNE. He continued to have lovers after his marriage to HERA and among them were EUROPA, IO, SEMELE and GANYMEDE (he became AQUARIUS).

ZEUS had 7 children. These children were had in many ways and with many women. These children also became gods.

Both HERA and ZEUS disliked ARES, and he was the god of war.

ATHENA another child of ZEUS was born full-grown from his forehead in body armor and no mother. She is the goddess of the city, handicrafts, and agriculture.

A href="http://myths.freshcaffeine.com/2006/05/apollo.html">APOLLO was the son of ZEUS and LETO. He is the twin brother to ARTIMIS. He is the god of music.

APHRODITE is the daughter of ZEUS and DIONE (there are actually 2 accounts about her birth). She is the goddess of love. She was the wife of HEPHAETUS.

HERMES was the son of ZEUS and MAIA. He was the messenger of ZEUS. This meant he was the fastest of the gods. He is the god of the thieves and of commerce; he also guides the dead to the underworld.

ARTIMIS is the daughter of ZEUS and LETO. She is the twin sister of APOLLO. She is the goddess of hunting and all things wild. She like APOLLO hunts with a silver arrow. She is also a virgin goddess and a goddess of chastity. She presides over childbirth despite her own lack of experience because of the fact that she caused her mother no pain when she was born.

HEPHAESTUS was the son of ZEUS and HERA. There are accounts that say he was produced without a father and is only the son of HERA. He is the only one of the gods that is physically ugly. He is the god of fire and a blacksmith. He however is very kind and a lover of peace. His wife is APHRODITE, also called AGLIAIA.

CRONOS/CRONUS

Greek Mythology
Titan
Husband to Rhea

CRONOS or CRONUS was the ruling TITAN during the Golden Age. As the youngest son of URANUS/OURANOS (the sky god) and GAIA/GAIA (the earth mother), he came to power by castrating his Father URANUS. His wife RHEA was his own sister. Their offspring were the first of the OLYMPIANS.

CRONOS had been warned that he would be overthrown by one of his own children. To prevent this, he swallowed his first five children as soon as they were born. This worked until RHEA, unhappy at the loss of her children, substituted a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes for their sixth child, ZEUS. GAIA had helped RHEA with this plan.

When he grew up ZEUS would revolt against CRONOS and the other TITANS, defeat them, and banish them to TARARUS in the underworld. ZEUS was hidden in Crete, and when he was older, he returned and forced CRONOS to disgorge all the other children (POSEIDON, HADES, HERA, HESTIA and DEMETER), who had grown inside of him. ZEUS and his siblings fought a war against CRONOS and the TITANS. ZEUS won, and the TITANS were confined in TARTARUS, a cave in the deepest part of the underworld.

CRONOS managed to escape to Italy, where he ruled as SATURN (a corn god). The period of his rule was said to be a golden age on earth, honored by the Saturnalia feast

And the Story Begins

I have been thinking about doing this for a very long time. I just never got around to doing it. Now I have the time and I have all the resources that I need. I thought that I would enjoy putting together a site that is all about the Myths of the world.

I can never seem to find a book that has all of the information that I want in it or a website that is easy to use to find what I am looking for. So, here you go, that is what I intend to do. I want to make a site that will be useful for everyone and give me some enjoyment in the meantime.

The idea is that I will try to post a new myth everyday and that I will do my best to link each myth to other gods and goddesses when that needs to be done for easy reading and learning. Hopefully, this site will bring me lots of enjoyment and bring you what you are looking for.

Right now I am going to get started on my first post, in the meantime you can check out FreshCaffeine.com.

Also, please feel free to post if you have questions or comments to anything that I post. I won't be allowing HTML in any of my comments in an effort to prevent SPAMMERS from posting things to my blog. If you have a link that you would like posted you can email it to me at Kellie (remove spaces) Cole@Gmail.com with the subject "MYTHS:COMMENTS/URLS".
